Homowo festival

Homowo is a traditional festival celebrated by the Ga people of Ghana to commemorate their resilience after a period of famine. Meaning "hooting at hunger," the festival is a celebration of survival, abundance and community. Families come together to prepare and share kpokpoi (a traditional meal), and other cultural rituals that strengthen communal bonds.

In documenting the festival, I was less interested in the grand ceremonies than in the quieter moments that often go unnoticed. I focused on the small interactions that unfold between people—a shared glance, a helping hand, moments of rest, laughter, preparation, and care. These everyday gestures reveal another layer of the festival, one that speaks to intimacy, belonging, and the relationships that sustain community beyond the public
